Early Ancient Egyptians buried their dead in small pits in the desert. The desert dehydrated the bodies quickly because of how hot it was. Later Ancient Egyptians began burying the bodies in coffins. Bugs began to eat the bodies, which caused the bodies to be not lifelike. The Egyptians covered the bodies in strips of linen then put them in coffins, which caused the bodies to remain lifelike.
